Richwine said his deputies "continue to do excellent work."
Pulaski County Sheriff's deputies responded to 6,442 calls for service in 2017. They conducted 4,110 traffic stops and issued 618 traffic citations and 646 warnings. They completed 1,101reports, made 656 arrests and served over 3,500 civil papers. Two deputies were recognized by federal authorities for doing an excellent job.
The dispatchers have answered 3,891 911 calls. A total of 51,631 administration calls were received and 14,548 outgoing calls were made for a total 70070 calls. 97.69 percent of the 911 calls were answered in less than 10 seconds; this number would have been 98.28 percent if not for a power outage. The 911 center was also updated to be compatible with state upgrades, and it stayed within the 911 budget.
The jail has had a rise in the average daily population to 84 inmates, up from 58 inmates in 2016. Jail officers booked in 1,147 offenders with an average time of 33 minutes. Transports have decreased in the jail to approximately 400. Jail officers logged and inspected 5,948 pieces of mail. Over 300 cell and living quarter inspections were conducted to make sure the jail stays within the guidelines of acceptability. Jail kitchen staff prepared over 92,000 meals. With the federal and Indiana Department of Correction inmates, the department collected almost $300,000 in housing fees. In 2018, with a full year of federal inmates, the department should collect $500.000 in housing fees.
The jail staff was able to provide inmate workers for several public service activities. The county garden and two education programs provided to inmates help with rehabilitation once they have served their sentences. Several churches provide religious services to inmates.
The sheriff reports the administrative staff has also done "an excellent job." In the first three years of Richwine's administration, the department has returned $304,252 from its budget.
"We were still able to do various upgrades to the jail, new water control system in the jail and upgrades to the dispatch center," Richwine said. "This year we are upgrading the phone system in dispatch and door control system for the justice center. Both are original to the building of the justice center."
In his year-end report, the sheriff thanked all the county commissioners and council, members past and present. "It has been a pleasure to work with each of you, I am eager to continue to make the sheriff's office something we are proud to call ours. The first three years as sheriff have been very productive."
