In addition, the Chamber elected officers. They are president Judy Heater, vice president Brad Conn, secretary Kathy Thompson and treasurer Steve Morrison.
Judge Shurn is the 29th recipient of the Halleck award which was first presented by the Chamber in 1979 to its namesake, the late Dr. Harold J. Halleck.
Shurn has been active over the years in many organizations, including Pulaski County Historical Society, Boy Scouts, 4-H, Winamac Kiwanis Club and his church. Master of Ceremonies, Dan Frain, introduced Shurn and gave an overview of his community work.
A surprise guest at the banquet was Judge Shurn's son, Stephan, who flew in for the occasion from his Texas Air Force base. Steve Shurn recently completed a tour of duty in the Middle East. In sharing a little of Steve's experiences, Shurn told of his son flying flag-draped coffins home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Shurn and his wife Mary also have a daughter, Meghan, who works in the oil industry in Texas.
After accepting the award, Shurn spoke briefly, expressing his reluctance to talk about his own achievements, but adding he was honored to live and work in such a remarkable community.
