Sen. Head said governor’s speech may help build public and political support to improve schools; reform local governments, justice system.
Daniels’ seventh State of the State called on lawmakers to pass legislation improving Indiana schools, reforming local government and updating the state’s criminal justice system.
Head said most Senate Republicans are philosophically supportive of Daniels’ call to identify and reward successful teachers and principals and provide assistance for turning around poor performing schools. “Determining exactly how Indiana gets there will require much homework by lawmakers and much input from the public,” he added.
Head said other Senate GOP objectives for the 2011 legislative session include fostering private-sector job growth, cutting government red tape and promoting fair redistricting.
Rep. Dermody remarks on State of the State
STATEHOUSE – “The governor was right on point in his address,” said Rep. Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte). “We all want to get Hoosiers back to work and help Hoosier families. Our plan is to create a balanced budget without raising taxes, and the governor has given us his full support on that issue. Indiana has been leading the nation out of this recession and we will help the state continue to do so.
“I believe the governor’s focus on education during the address was well put. All children in Indiana deserve the best education available, and it is important that they are well prepared for the work force after graduation. There are many discussions right now about the best options for improving education in Indiana. We are open to suggestions and I look forward to helping facilitate those discussions on the House floor.”
