In other business, the school board accepted a proposal from Performance Services, Inc. of Indianapolis to submit a plan to construct a wind turbine at the school.
The board’s technical review committee met Dec. 7 to consider the Contractor’s Qualification Proposals. It received two and reviewed them with the committee’s consultant, InterDesign of Indianapolis. Performance Services is an Indiana-based design-build engineering and construction company, specializing in eco-friendly, energy-saving systems.
Also in other business, the board approved a resolution to make the necessary transfers so that all accounts have a zero or positive balance for the year of 2010. The resolution also provided that funds be encumbered from the 2010 accounts for use in 2011.
Under discussion items, high school principal Don Street informed the board that 60 students from North White High School visited West Central last week to tour the various vocational classes that are offered.
Superintendent Charles Mellon shared with the board letters from Marine Brichard, foreign exchange student and Sandy Saltsman, host parent, concerning the policy and past practice of visiting students’ participation in commencement activities. Street stated that exchange students enter West Central as a junior and therefore, receive a certificate of attendance during the underclassman awards program. The board agreed to maintain this policy and practice.
Additional discussion took place concerning special needs students who choose to continue their education after their senior year, and their participation in commencement activities with their class. Further consideration will be given to this issue.
The board approved the employment of Marlena Lewark as seventh-grade girls basketball coach, and Jonelle Carns for a position with Cooperative School Services.
Conference requests were approved for Linda Ferguson to attend the FETC Conference in Orlando, Fla. The Indian Trails Career Cooperative will pay expenses; and for Amber Leman and members of the student council to attend the annual Student Council Lock-In.
