The collapse occurred about 5 p.m. No immediate cause for the collapse was offered by officials at the scene. The bar closed four years ago, and the building has been vacant for some time.
The Monterey Volunteer Fire Department, led by Fire Chief Andy Zehner, took charge of the building site, ensuring the safety of the public. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Department was also on the scene. NIPSCO was contacted to shut off any electric power and gas to the building.
The collapsed building attracted local residents to the site, as well as people from around the area to view the damage, according to county commissioner Larry Brady who was present at the site.
Pulaski County REACT was brought in to provide additional traffic control, lighting and other assistance as needed. Dave Dare, Pulaski County Building Inspector, provided his assistance. Zehner Excavating arrived to ensure the building was completely secured, and to prevent any further damage.
Removal of the rubble from the site is to begin Monday.
Brady extended this thanks to all parties involved for job well done!, adding "it saddens many, to see this landmark business destroyed." The structure had housed a tavern for decades, dating back to the 1930s.
