Once the winter season is over, a final decision will be made after considering all options. Students will report to school on Feb. 17 and April 21 (the built-in make-up days). The end of the third grading period has been moved to Friday, March 14.
In other business, Mellon reported the second semester student count was taken on Feb. 3. The studentenrollment dropped six students as compared to first semester.
Board president Jim Bergens opened the floor for public comments on the contract between the superintendent and school board.
Bergens also made the board appointments for 2014.
The board approved the wind turbine maintenance contract with SUREnergy, as presented.
The board approved the employment of Caryn Yochum as the girls 7th grade basketball coach, as presented.
Approval was given to the resignation from Susan Bergens, effective at the end of the current school year, as presented.
The board approved the following conference requests, as presented:
- Darren Rodriguez, Marc Hall, Melvin Wireman and Jeff Horlacher to attend the Grazier Football Clinic in Chicago, with the expenses being paid by the athletic department.
- Joanne Stevens and members of BPA to attend the BPA State Leadership conference in Indianapolis.
Middle/high school principal Don Street reported that Mrs. Kennedy is learning more about the newly released College-and-Career-Readiness Assessment Implementation as required by state law. Students who do not meet certain scores on the PSAT, ECA, and Accuplacer Placement Test (New State Diagnostic test) or do not meet certain SAT or ACT scores are required to receive remediation. West Central as well as all other high schools are learning about the state requirements as the state releases the information. This will have a large impact upon West Central's remediation program at the high school level.
The Girls IHSAA draw was released Sunday. West Central girls received the bye and will play Friday vs. the winner of South Newton and North White. The girls sectional will be at West Central Feb. 11, 14, and 15 - weather permitting!
On behalf of the West Central Schools Educational Foundation, Street thanked all who supported the dinner Jan. 31. The third-term parent-teacher conferences were Jan. 6. The FFA will celebrate FFA week during the Week of Feb. 17.
Elementary school principal Dan Zylstra reported the Title I staff met with teachers Jan. 9 to organize interventions for K-5 students. On Jan. 17 the school formally kicked off its Accelerated Reader Reading Incentive, with Mr. Warren bringing the band over from the high school. Thursday mornings in January were used for grade-level collaboration on Acuity scores, work on Simple 6 scoring for the School Improvement Plan, and a presentation on student motivation by Randy Shrock. The last round of Acuity testing prior to ISTEP+ began on Feb. 3 and will finish up on Feb. 23.
Student of the Month certificates were presented to Alyvia Faler from the elementary school level, and Shelby Powell from the high school level. Jennipher Durham was honored at the middle school level but was unable to attend the meeting.
