In other business, the board voted to approve Superintendent Dan Foster's plan to re-organize the responsibilities in the central office.
Approval was also given to update or upgrade the firewall/content filtering system on the school corporation's computer system. Adam Bennett told the board this update/upgrade will give better control and protection of all devices.
Foster reported to the board on the following items:
- Christmas Break Projects: The usual shampooing and waxing of floors will be done. More classrooms will be switched over from pneumatic to digital controls, along with other maintenance-type work.
- Personnel Report: Janet Graham has submitted her retirement request as instructional assistant beginning in January — she will continue her bus driving position. After 20 years, Mark Eber has resigned as the head soccer coach. He was thanked for his years of service.
- Software Update: Foster and the principals are looking at a software program (Odysseyware) which provides flexible online eLearning solutions for students with special needs or circumstances.
The Condition of Funds Statement indicated that all corporation funds had positive balances. The General Fund Comparison Statement showed that 67% of the yearly appropriation remained — on track with past years. All claims were approved as presented.
Lindsey Kozubik was appointed to the Kewanna-Union Township Library Board.
Under report items, elementary school principal Jill Collins thanked the PTA for sponsoring Breakfast with Santa. Second grade visited Amish Acres on Dec. 4, and the State Police K-9 unit visited the elementary on Dec. 6. Smoky the Bear (sponsored by the Tippecanoe River State Park) will visit the elementary this week and the Express Choir Christmas Concert will be Dec. 12. The Kindergarten through Grade 2 Christmas Program is Dec. 20. January will be the second staff development focusing on evaluation software.
Middle school principal Brian Dickinson reported that Acuity testing has been completed. The middle school Christmas Concert was Dec. 3. The middle school received a $500 grant for the Warrior Up Club — a club for students to do community/school service projects.
High school principal Rick DeFries reported that textbook adoption this year will be English/Language Arts — the adoption process will be different in that more books/materials will be available electronically. The student council is sponsoring an Angel Tree whereby students buy gifts for others. The high school held a fundraiser for Philippines Relief. The high school band/choir Christmas Concert is Dec. 9. The high school boys basketball team will once again participate in the Holiday Tournament on Jan. 3 and 4.
During Board Comment, Mr. DeFries was welcomed back after an illness. Mrs. Graham and Mr. Eber were thanked for their years of service. The football and cross country teams were commended. Ms. Kozubik was welcomed to the Kewanna-Union Township Library Board.
The next school board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m., Jan. 13, in the Distance Learning Lab.
