Also taken into police custody were Steven Ezekiel Richie, 37, and Tanya Louise Fitch, 43.
When Miller failed to return from work, the county sheriff's department issued an alert to area law enforcement agencies, and the sheriff's NIXLE Citizen Alert system.
Later that evening the sheriff’s office received information that Miller was at the Medaryville residence.. Sgt. Fred Rogers and Deputy John Haley parked near the residence and approached it on foot in the dark, according to the police report. The officers could clearly see Miller, Richie (who was wanted on Starke County charges) and Fitch sitting in the residence.
Officers maintained a perimeter around the trailer house and summoned additional officers. The sheriff, members of the Pulaski SWAT Team, officers from North Judson, Starke County, Jasper County, Monticello Police, and Indiana State Police from Lafayette Post responded. An ambulance was also staged nearby.
After 22 verbal commands by the sheriff to surrender, Miller and Fitch exited the rear of the trailer and were taken into custody without incident.
A flash bang device was then tossed into the residence and officers made armed entry into the home. A hole was discovered in a closet floor, and it was determined Richie had fled under the trailer. After refusing verbal commands, a K-9 from Monticello police was released and after numerous bite wounds, Richie surrendered. He was immediately treated by the staged ambulance and transported to Pulaski Memorial Hospital for additional care.
