It was agreed that it was successful to display historic German artifacts in the opera house at the GermanFest; as they generated interest among those attending. It was observed that the event appeared to be a big success for the organizing committee, and that next year the Historical Society hopes to be involved in a more meaningful way.
The Historical Society will hold a fund-raising concert Oct. 12, featuring the Eel River Band, at the Winamac VFW. Plans will be discussed in more detail by the fund-raising committee which will meet Aug. 22. Also at that meeting the committee will discuss applying for a Community Foundation grant.
A brief discussion was also held on how the Society might participate in Farmers Market on Sept. 14 and Winter Wonderland on Dec. 7.
The possibility of replacing the ceiling on the first floor of the opera house was debated. More information will be gathered to report at the next meeting. It was also noted that some repairs and paint touch-ups need to be made on the outside of the building.
It was also reported that some repairs need to be made at the historic Railroad Freight Depot in Winamac, and also to the nearby Railroad Signal/Ticket Booth which has apparently suffered from some vandalism.
Historical Society president Steve Morrison reported that Steve Roby has purchased an old gear that was on display at the museum and is using it with a tillage tool, being pulled by his draft horses.
The membership committee reported that membership/donor letters are ready for distribution.
It was reported that Alex and Troy Haschel have leased the north store front of the opera house and will be returning with a new business in that location. Morrison and board member Ryan Harrison have drawn up a new lease agreement which the Society will use for the purpose.
A brief discussion was held on the donor sidewalk bricks. Board member Lin Morrison will follow-up on this project.
The Historical Society is also working to round-up its own organizational documents from past years to put together a history of the Society. Anyone with photos, news clippings, programs or other documents is encouraged to share them with the Historical Society.
Harrison was thanked for his efforts to update the organization's website: www.pulaskihistory.net.
Natalie Federer is overseeing the Facebook page: Pulaski County Historical Society.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Opera House, Winamac.
