“I was honored to attend this award ceremony and humbled by the life this extraordinary Hoosier lived,” said Rep. Dermody. “Ralph Braun’s story is a true example of the American Dream. Through hard work and determination, he built a world-renowned business with only a handful of individuals.”

Beginning in 1972, Braun started Braun Corporation, a small mobility manufacturing company, which is now one of the world’s top leaders in the industry. With a majority of their workforce located in Northwest Indiana, the company also employs sale representatives and customer service personnel around the country.

Braun, who passed away Feb, 8, 2013, received the Distinguished Hoosier Award for his innovative work improving the mobility industry. This award is one of the state’s highest honors and is only presented to those who have gained recognition by the governor through their vast accomplishments and positive impact on Indiana.

“Braun’s story is a testament of Hoosier innovation and is a huge inspiration to me,” said Rep. Dermody. “He overcame every obstacle, as someone who relied on a wheelchair himself, and built a three-wheel scooter and wheelchair accessible van increasing the level of independence and accessibility for people.”
