Guests at the meeting, were the top three fifth-grade students from West Central and Eastern Pulaski elementary schools who had written essays based on the natural resources’ curriculum “Water Riches”. During the program, the students discovered how they finished in each school’s contest and received their awards.

Samantha Garlach, daughter of Carmen and Roy Garlach, was awarded first place in West Central’s “Indiana Water Riches” essay contest. The second place winner was Brielle Shepperd. Brenna McKay received the third place award.
Ryan Huggler, son of Nancy and Alan Huggler, was awarded first place in Eastern Pulaski’s “Indiana Water Riches” essay contest. Zane Jenkins was the second place winner. The third place award went to Carter Cook.
“Water Riches” is taught to the county’s fifth grade students so they can learn more the hydrologic cycle, watersheds, and one of Indiana’s most precious resources – water. SWCD and Extension educators traveled to the schools with hands-on experiments to demonstrate water related concepts.
Upon completion, students are invited to participate in the essay contest that helps reinforce what they have learned.
Both first place winners read their essays to the audience at the annual meeting which were enjoyed by all in attendance.
This conservation essay contest is sponsored by the Pulaski County Soil and Water Conservation District.
