One stop on the tour was John Davenport’s gravestone to learn about his role in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
Davenport was born in Massachusetts and served with the Militia ca. 1778 – 1881. He moved to the State of New York and there he also served in the War of 1812. John moved to Ohio and by 1837 he was living in Pulaski County with his son John Jr. and family, just north of what would become the town of Winamac.
John Davenport was buried here before Pulaski was even a county. In John Sr.’s estate his possessions were: 1 yoke of oxen, 1 mare and colt, 1 wagon, 1 bed & bedding, and 1 black coat. John Jr. had been taking care of his father for almost four years. John’s coffin and box cost $8.”
In 2010 a ceremony was held in Winamac to dedicate a marker for Revolutionary War Veteran John Davenport.
The Junior Historical Society Civil War Club looks to host a new tour in the spring. Self-guided cemetery tour booklets from both the first and the second tours can be picked up from the ibrary in Winamac that help guide you around the cemetery to each stone. A map of the cemetery, row and section are all part of the booklet as well as biographical information for each person.
The club was also honored to receive an Indiana Humanities Council Grant, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, in March. These funds will be used to help support the club and their many activities for the 2012-2013 year.
Any youth, ages 12-18 who are interested in any aspect of the Civil War, are invited to attend the Pulaski County Jr. Historical Society Civil War club which is organized in partnership with the Pulaski County Historical Society, Pulaski County Court System and the Pulaski County Extension Office.
This club explores Pulaski County residents' involvement in the Civil War through those who served in Company B, 87th Infantry Regiment and Company H, 46th Infantry Regiment.
