Becker 14, and his father Indiana State Police Cpl. Dan Becker who is a member of the Indiana Patriot Guard assisted other Patrior Guards to pull a family of four from a burning Jeep on Jan. 14, during a procession escorting the body of Spc. Robert Tauteris Jr. of Hamlet from the Porter County Airport to a North Judson funeral home. Becker was leading the procession eastbound when the westbound Jeep stopped for the procession and was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The impact caused the Jeep to burst into flames.
Two of the Jeep's occupants suffered severe injuries and burns while two others were treated at a local hospital and released. The elder Becker was admitted to an area hospital for for smoke inhalation and burns suffered as a result of his efforts.
Also in other business, the board received an update from Pete Beiriger and Rick Absi of Performance Services on the wind turbine. At the present time all of the issues have been worked out and the turbine is running efficiently.
The board adopted a resolution to approve of the necessary transfers from the Capital Projects Fund (350) to the Transportation Fund (410) so that all accounts have a zero or positive balance as of June 3012. Superintendent Mellon informed the board members that if the county tax draw comes in before the end of June this transfer will not be necessary.
The board approved the establishment of the West Central Rise Evaluation Model, as presented. This model is a variation from the state teacher evaluation model. Jeff
The board approved the contract for Karen Wettstein as pool director for the 2012-13 school year, as presented.
Also, the board approved the Title I Grant application for the 2012-13 school year, as presented.
Under discussion items, middle/high school principal Don Street reported that the band trip to Florida was a success. The board also congratulated Mrs. Mellon’s Health Occupation Class for receiving a Bronze Level Healthy Hoosier School Award.
Mellon updated the board on the summer maintenance projects in each building. The board was informed of bus inspection being held on June 26. He also reported that it is estimated that the school corporation will receive $155,600 less in tuition support from the state for the next school year. The insurance loss history was shared with the board.
