Memorial Day: Janet Onken (center) leads a Civil War Veterans walking tour for the Pulaski County Junior Civil War Club through the Winamac Cemetery Thursday. Club members placed flowers on each stone in honor and memory of the soldiers for Memorial Day. See story below |
The grave of Edmund Brown was one of the Civil War stops on the tour. He was a former minister, businessman and banker. He was the son of two of the earlier settlers of the county, Ira and Sophia Brown. Mr. Brown was born in Indian Creek Township on Aug. 9, 1845 on the farm just across the river from Pulaski which is still known as the Brown homestead.
In August 1861, a few days past sixteen years of age, Brown enlisted in Company C. 27 th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served during three years of the conflict when his enlistment expired in September 1864. His regiment was engaged in many of the more important battles, including Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
He was the regimental historian and compiled a 500-page record of the Twenty-seventh, which is on the shelf at the Winamac library. A military funeral was held by the G.A.R. and the American Legion. A salute of guns and the blowing of taps, just as the sun sank in the western horizon, reverberated as the departing comrade lay down for his well-earned rest.
This biographical information was provided by Janet Onken.
The tour stopped at 15 different stones and club members placed flowers on each stone in honor and memory of the soldiers for Memorial Day.
The Pulaski County Jr. Historical Society Civil War Club was has also been honored to receive an Indiana Humanities Council Grant, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, in March. These funds will be used to help support the club and their many activities for the 2012-2013 year.
