Civil War buffs: Members and guests of the Civil War Chapter of the Pulaski County Junior Historical Society, led by historical archivist Natalie Daily Federer and Judge Mike Shurn (front right), visited the Eli Lilly Civil War Museum and the Indiana State Historical Museum in Indianapolis last month to learn more about Indiana's role in the Civil War.
The museum connects Indiana Civil War history with national history through interactive displays, historical objects and interesting historical perspectives of Hoosiers who fought in the Civil War. Twelve youth and adults made the trip; the first of many for this club.
The next club meeting will run from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, at the Winamac Library and will focus on Shiloh. April is the 150th anniversary of this bloody battle that took place in Tennessee on April 6-7, 1862, with over 23,746 estimated causalities. The general public is welcome to attend.
The club was also honored to receive an Indiana Humanities Council Grant, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, in March. These funds will be used to help support the club and its many activities for the 2012-2013 year.
Any youth, ages 12-18 who are interested in any aspect of the Civil War, are invited to attend the Pulaski County Jr. Historical Society Civil War Chapter club, which is organized in partnership with the Pulaski County Historical Society, Pulaski Circuit Court and the Pulaski County Extension Office.
This club explores Pulaski County residents’ involvement in the Civil War through those who served in Company B, 87th Infantry Regiment and Company H, 46th Infantry Regiment. Meetings will be monthly with numerous activities and guest speakers. The club will also be planning some trips within the state to historical museums and battlefields.
