In other business, Superintendent Charles Mellon reported the first monthly draw was received from the state. The draw indicated a $310,581 decrease in revenue for 2012. This follows a reduction of $323,213 in 2011.
In related business, the board approved the following expenditure goals for 2012:
- GOAL: Student Academic Achievement – Maintain current level of 65.58% of all expenditures.
- GOAL: Student Instructional Support – Maintain current level of 32.67% of all expenditures.
- GOAL: Operation of Non-Instructional – Maintain current level of 1.72% of all expenditures.
- GOAL: Non-Program – Maintain current level of .04% of all expenditures.
Under report items, principals Don Street and Tony Brose and guidance counselor Marci Kennedy presented information on the recent AdvancEd visit and the findings. They also presented the board members with different options that are being discussed which need to be implemented in the near future.
Under discussion items, Street announced that the Life Skills class would host a Chili Supper prior to the West Central vs. Pioneer basketball game this Friday. Proceeds will be placed in a scholarship fund. The West Central Schools Educational Foundation will host the annual chicken and pork dinner Jan. 27 prior to the basketball game with Winamac. Dinner is served from 5 to 7 p.m.
Brose informed the board of the current “All Call” being expanded district-wide beginning Feb.1. The elementary has been using the system for the past few years and is pleased with the results.
Mellon presented the new guidelines for schools offering Driver Education.
The 2012-13 school calendar was discussed. A sample calendar similar to this current year was presented as a starting point for discussion.
The board approved a motion to transfer funds to close out the 2011 school year, as presented.
The board approved the employment of John Phillips as a temporary teacher during Ashley Reinhold’s maternity leave, and as varsity baseball coach, as presented.
Conference requests were approved for the following, as presented:
- John Wasinski – National Science Teachers Conference in Indianapolis.
- Becky Reed – IATCCC Track Clinic – all expenses paid by the athletic department.
The board approved the request from Janet Kruger and members of the Student Council for the Student Council Lock-in at the high school.
