In other business, the vocational health occupations class will move to West Central from North White High school next school year Supt. Charles Mellon told the board in an update from previous discussion. Seventeen students are enrolled in the class. The school board spent time earlier in the day looking at facilities to locate the class. The class equipment will be moved from North White to West Central this week.
Also in other business, high school principal Don Street told the board that 63 seniors would graduate in the Class of 2010, and 20 will receive the "academic honors" diploma. Street also announced that West Central has been named recipient of a $30,000 Tech Prep grant.
Middle school principal Kay Beasey announced the eighth-grade class would leave on its annual Washington D.C. trip on May 31. She added that eight of the eighth-grades were honored with Presidential Academic Fitness Awards this year. She also thanked the many local businesses for allowing field trips to their facilities this year.
Elementary principal Tony Brose reported that the elementary school hosted the countywide spelling bee on May 13, and the West Central students took nine of the top 13 places, and Casey Wuethrich placed first overall. He acknowledged the support of Todd Gudeman of the Patio Drive-In for several WCES projects. Brose also informed the board that a few home-schooled students will attend West Central next fall.
The board approved the employment of Mike Harter and Nick Tribby to teach the summer driver's education classes. A medical leave request was approved for Tom Hermiz of Cooperative School Services.
The second reading of the policy manual addition regarding social networking was approved as presented. Book rental fees and cafeteria prices were approved for next school year. The board also okayed a five-year contract with Coca-Cola Bottling for the high school as presented. A request from the high school drama department to hold a performance on Sunday, Oct. 10 was approved.
Brose presented the board with information on the revised elementary school improvement plan. The main focus of the plan will be to move from Target Assistance in grades K-3 for the Title I program to the school-wide model for grades K-5. The board voted to approve the plan.
The board appointed Rita Carpenter to serve on the Pulaski County Public Library Board.
