The elementary school has decided to hold a kindergarten and first grade Christmas program on Dec. 20 at 6:45 p.m. Grades 2 and 3 will hold a March concert likely consisting of vocals in grade 2 and recorders in grade 3. Grades 4 and 5 will have a recorder concert in late spring.
Middle/high school principal Don Street reported the middle school staff is in the process of asking students about their interest in choir. If there is an interest, the school will offer a middle school choir a few days a week during study hall/resource. Tony Rossi will volunteer to work with these students.
In other business, the board approved winter sports contracts as follows:
Tyson Mellon – junior varsity boys basketball coach
Ryan Kline – 7th grade boys basketball coach & assistant baseball coach
Gary Siemens – girls varsity assistant/c-team basketball coach
Marlena Lewark – 7th grade girls basketball coach
Stacey Brickley – 6th grade girls basketball coach
Kenny Nielsen – varsity wrestling coach & middle school wrestling coach
Jason Wall – varsity assistant wrestling coach
The board also approved the employment of Trevor Chrzan as an iInstructional assistant; and Rebekah Overton as iInstructional assistant and bus aide.
The board approved the 2011-12 high ability grant, as presented.
Also in his report, Brose announced that Title I will begin its after-school tutoring program in November as the staff continues their work to prepare students for the ISTEP+ exams in the spring. Brose also recognized parent volunteers from the Parent Teacher Council for their efforts with Red Ribbon Week and for their hospitality in feeding the teachers during parent conferences.
The elementary held parent conferences this past week. Teachers are still meeting with those who could not attend the first two days, but as of his report to the school board, teachers have conferenced with 94 percent of parents. The goal is always 100 percent.
Street thanked all the individuals who participated in the 8th grade Reality Store event. Monica Gainor organized the activity.
He also reported the ASVAB will be administered to the 11th graders on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Superintendent Charles Mellon reviewed the current balances in the Capital Projects Fund accounts with the board and shared how these encumbered funds could be used in areas that need addressed. With most of the major mechanical and safety issues taken care of, more of the CPF money can go toward technology. The corporation will be looking into increasing bandwidth, wireless connection and one to one computing.
He also reported the North White School Corporation has filed a formal application with the Cooperative School Services seeking membership in the special education organization. The CSS board of directors will take this under consideration and make a recommendation to each of the eight school corporations currently in the cooperative.
The board approved leave requests, as presented for Ashley Reinhold (maternity leave)l and Becky Reed (personal leave).
A conference request was approved for Tony Brose to attend the Autism Team Training in Bloomington.
